I prefer calling my dogs by their name or when I am referring to them I call them he or she. I think it is very appropriate because just like what you have said, they are not non-living things. We only use "it" for inanimate objects and there is no way that they are inanimate objects. However, what bothers me the most is when people call them that dog or that pig. I think it is really annoying for me. I think that if you do not have an idea about the gender of the dog, it is best to ask the owner so that you would not offend anyone.

I agree with you ilovedogss37. I have never thought of that but when you said it, wow, it is indeed very harsh. I think it is harsher than when you refer to an animal as it. I also agree that if we do not know the gender of a dog, we must ask the owner first because we might not know if we offend him or not if we call his dog it. I have this friend who kept on my calling my dog that dog. At first it does not really bother me but when I think about it, I am really offended for my dog.

I have also experienced something like that! I took Princess in the park and I decided to let her loose so that we can play fetch and so that she can run around. Both of us were really having fun playing around until this woman approached me and asked me, "Is that dog really hard to take care of?” I was really annoyed because she referred to Princess as that dog. I was really offended because she should have asked me first the name of my dog, the gender, or something like that. I just told her no and I walked away together Princess. I know that was really mean.

I do not think that was mean at all! I would react more differently and meaner than you, I guess. If I were you I would have said to that woman, "Her name is Princess and she is not an object so back off." I could get really mean like that especially when it comes to my dogs. I am very protective of them and I would not let anyone hurt them physically or verbally. Call me crazy or whatever but I think that they can also hear and understand what we are telling them.

I can get protective of my dogs too but I do not think that I could do that. I am too chicken for that. Anyway, I also agree with what you have said that dogs can understand what we are saying to them. I think that it hurts them when other people say words that are offending for them or maybe it's just the both of us. I do not, in any way, think that you are crazy. You are just a loving mother to your little dogs. I think that it is just normal to do so if you really care about your dogs.

Dogs are living creatures and we should treat them with respect, kindness, and compassion. We should not only limit our respect to humans, but we should also extend them to animals as well. I believe that we should only call inanimate objects as "it" and we should not place dogs in this category because it is just not right. We should refer to them as he or she because they have sexes just like we do and that is male and female. We should extend respect and kindness to all living things made by God.

I agree with what you have said. You have explained it very well and I could not add anything else. There are some people that say that I am crazy because I have a different point of view and opinion from them. I also think that they should respect what I think because we have the freedom to express what we want to say especially if it is already hurting us. I love my dogs very much and I want other people to respect me and my dog as well. However, I have realized that I should not get mad at other people if they think otherwise, because just like what I have said, we have different opinions.

You are not crazy. I just think that it is the right thing to do as humans. People may react differently to what we say and what we think, but hey, don't mind them. They have their own business so mind so I don't give a care about them. Just let them think what they want to think and I hope that eventually they will learn how to respect other living things as well.

Well as for me, I don't hate people who call my dogs or other dogs "it". I am not really bothered by it because I also call some dogs that I don't know that term. Most of the people I know are also not bothered by that term so I guess that is not a big problem for us. However, I call my Siberian husky by his name or sometime I call him baby. I guess what really matter is you are not hurting the animal physically. Just like what you have said, we have our own opinion and this is what I think.

Yes, I could not agree with you more. Well, I guess if they want to call other dogs it or that dog, I would not mind them anymore. However, if they call my babies that, all hell will break loose. I am just kidding. I will try to become more open-minded and I will try not to let what other people say affect me because maybe they do not have any idea that they are offending other people. Maybe they are not dog owners and they do not feel what we are feeling when they call our babies like that.

If that is your view on this discussion, I would respect your opinion. However, if someone was to call my dog it or that dog I would feel really bad because it feels as if that they are discriminating or degrading my dog. I don't know, maybe it is just me. I am an advocate for the rights of the dog and I think that we should not abuse them physically, verbally, or any kind of abuse. I am not contradicting your opinion in any way; I am just saying what I think about the issue and I hope that you will respect that too.

I am not a supporter of animal abuse in any way and I don't think that when you call a dog or another animal it you are already verbally abusing it. There are some countries which also refer to "it" as having a gender such as a female chair or a male bag. It happens in many other European countries that I heard call non-living things as "it" but still has gender. I hope you get my point. I am an animal lover. I love all kinds of dogs and I want only the best for them. I think that it does not mean that you disrespect animals when you call them "it".
