Nail Clipper
Yes you need a special tool, a nail clipper that is the right size for your dog. They are not real expensive, but I think it is a good idea to get a good quality one. Next you need a dog who does not mind getting his nails clipped. If your dog is ok with you handling his paws and checking between his toes that is a good start. If not then you may run into problems when you go to clip the nails.

Re: Claw(Toe nail) Trimming
The first time for your dog to get a trim needs a little more energy in restraining. Place the dog in the table. Stand in one side and use your body weight to cover the dog on his back and start holding the claws from opposite side.

For front claw trimming, keep your left forearm over the neck so he won’t keep lifting up. Use your left hand to hold the paw and right hand for the trimmer. You can use your body to push gently his shoulder if he attempts to rise.

Re: Nail Trimming
The dog will likely get a phobia when he gets hurt in his first trim, so the first time is very crucial to dogs to get him better to second time. Then, its better to leave it to vets to do the trimming that way dogs are supervised better.

Re: Nail Trimming
Some of us fear that its gonna hurt our beloved dog to get a trim but if its done in a careful manner or in a vet station, then there is no more to worry since it’s a grooming necessity for dogs to have their nail’s day too like humans.

Re: Nail Trimming
The dogs initially resist the attempt of touching their paws since they think its like harassing them or they feel they get harmed. Dogs must be routinely attended when having a trim as he learns with a feeling of security that its just gonna be alright to get a trim.

Re: Nail Trimming
Most dogs do not like their nails cut. I have a groomer come into my home. The fact that I am there calms my dogs down. Professional groomers are generally fast when trimming nails so it's over before the dog really realizes it. And moreover groomers who come to your house saves you a lot of money.
